What is Linux?
| Linux is a UNIX-like operating system that was originally designed by Norwegian programmer Linus Torvalds (from whom it takes it’s name) at the University of Helsinki to provide PC users with a free or very low-cost operating system comparable to UNIX systems. Linux is no longer restricted to the PC and runs on many different hardware platforms including Intel, Sun Sparc, PowerPC, and Alpha Processors. In fact, cut down versions of Linux are used on the operating systems of some mobile phones and MP3 players as well. |
| A Linux package made up of the Linux kernel, other system software, user applications, and with all major distributions, an installation program. Anyone can put together a Linux distribution, and the operating system can vary widely depending on the kernel version and system software employed. Linux is “open source” software (see below), which is freely available; however, the full distribution of Linux along with technical support and training are available for a fee from vendors such as Red Hat Software and Novell’s SuSe. |
| Due to its stability, general robustness and consequent high availability Linux has gained popularity especially with ISPs as the OS for hosting Web servers and among other commercial application developers. |

What is Open Source?
| When the source code of a computer program is made available free of charge to the general public, it's known as open source. The basis of open source software is to produce more useful and bug-free products for everyone to use. The concept relies on peer review to find and eliminate bugs in the program code. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) reviews then certifies open source programs. They have a stringent list of criteria that include making sure no one collects a royalty on the software and no person, group or field of endeavor can be denied access to the program. Linux is the best-known example; others include products like Apache, the dominant software for serving corporate web pages. |

| Available from HP are versions for up to 2 processors, up to 8 processors, and up to 16 processors specifically for SLES 9.
