Project Objective

Today companies have to deal with an ever changing environment .Globalization, mergers and acquisitions, and fierce competition are bringing the following challenges: Management of increasingly complex and diverse applications and systems; improvement of service quality (response time, availability…); Adaptive responses to business needs (demand peaks, new product introduction, new business process to implement…); Provision of better performing business activity monitoring tools; Reduction of costs

But most Information technology infrastructures have the following characteristics:
  • Heterogeneous, under-utilized, distributed resources
  • System and Application architectures in silos
  • Lack of a consolidated management solution

The gap between business needs and IT capabilities has thus widened in the past years.

AGOS is a development project that integrates and standardizes a scientific approach (INRIA) and a industrial approach (HP and Oracle) of 2 innovative technologies: Grid (Grid Computing) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)

AGOS is a secure platform that provides a:
  • Reference architecture of the technology integration
  • Standard based services library
  • Set of tools & processes to build AGOS applications and Business/IT monitoring solutions
  • Methodology to migrate existing applications to AGOS architecture
Companies will benefit from an automated and integrated IT management environment based on secured and distributed communicating agents.

This project will experiment the Open Source Proactive a solution that implements the European component model for Grid computing... However AGOS is not just an academic integration project but is aimed at providing a concrete solution that a company with an extended or local network would implement.

AGOS leverages recent progress in secured communicating agents and services technologies based on Open Source ProActive (European standards, portability and multi-platform/operating systems availability) that can support SOA architectures.

Developed by the OASIS team through a joint project between INRIA, CNRS, I3S and UNSA, ProActive has produced innovation (INPI patterns) and new standards currently evaluated by the European standards organization. ProActive technology has been transferred to ActiveEon startup, a partner of the AGOS project. This solution integrates Grid Computing (System management level), Service Oriented Architecture (Business process management level) and Business Intelligence (Company business management level) through innovation and standards. It will provide tools and dashboards to monitor real-time company activity at the 3 levels mentioned below.

Company management level: At this level Business Intelligence (BI) covers two domains, company business and market trends analysis based on historical data. This requires access to various geographically distributed data. Grid computing is a key enabler of this domain.
Real-time monitoring of company results in relation to company objectives. Automation of business processes based on Information technology is growing. These business processes will be monitored using AGOS BI tools... AGOS approach provides Business real-time based decision to business and geo managers. This is made possible by the innovative standards and component base of AGOS layers.

Business process management level: The manager of the business process will be able to monitor his business processes without knowing which platforms and applications execute it, nor the IT problems that could affect it. Business processes will be based on services that include a service level agreement that matches business requirements (response time, availability…)

System management level: AGOS provides an integrated management of grid computing resources based on the service level agreed with the business group. For example, a new web application that should display pages in less than 2 seconds (negotiated SLA) will execute on a grid/SOA infrastructure that can dynamically reconfigure its environment to match this requirement.

AGOS integrates these 3 levels. For example, the definition of a new business process (built by the management like a sales campaign, or inherited from a merger…) will be able to leverage existing services (SOA approach). The new process will be implemented as a flow of services (such as product availability in stock service). One or several Service Level Agreements (SLAs) will be associated to the process. Execution of the services will be automatically deployed and managed on the Grid/SOA and reconfigured according to SLAs and resources. The Business process manager will be able to real-time monitor the process activity. Ultimately this business process revenue will be automatically integrated into the Company business dashboard for top management monitoring.
