Buying PCs and thin clients from a single source makes life easier. Choosing HP
is even better.
There is a strong business case for buying all your PCs and thin clients from a single supplier. Consistency pays. You carry one pool of spare parts, train technicians on a single set of hardware, create one software image, deal with one vendor and one technical support team. Administrative costs fall.
- A complete range for education. HP has a full range of products for the education market, including notebooks, desktop PCs, workstations, handheld iPAQs, UMPCs, Tablet PCs, printers, servers, networking equipment etc. In particular, HP Remote Client Solutions, including HP Blade PCs, HP Blade Workstations, HP Thin Clients and the necessary software to run it all, covers all the bases.
- An environmentally - and socially-responsible vendor. When students choose institutions, they look for places that reflect their own values. The same is true for academics and for staff employees choosing where to work. The green agenda is increasingly important. HP Eco Solutions is the technology industry’s leading environmental program. It means looking beyond the hardware – at our supply chain, the materials we use, at recycling and reuse, and at our own operations and practices. It embraces our strategy to make it simpler for our customers to be green, to invest in innovation and lead by example using our influence responsibly. This means developing energy-efficient systems that are good for education and good for the environment.
- Energy efficiency. In operation, thin clients draw between 6 and 40 watts per hour compared with 150 to 350 watts for a typical desktop PC. The result is lower electricity bills and reduced CO2 emissions. Even with conventional notebooks, desktop PCs and workstations, HP has models that meet and exceed the latest ENERGY STAR® requirements.
- Reliable hardware. We design and build computers ourselves so we can ensure that they are robust and reliable. Our factories and suppliers are ISO 9001 certified for quality. We perform 47,000 hours of testing on each new commercial PC we launch. For example, we put new keyboard designs through a 20 million keystroke reliability marathon – this is the same as seven years of regular use. High-quality components, such as the magnesium alloy chassis in our notebooks, help make our kit more robust. Notebook PCs are particularly useful in a college or university environment – their portability enables anytime, anywhere learning – but they are also prone to accidental damage. This is why HP includes features such as drop-resistant hard drives and strong magnesium-alloy frames, splash-resistant keyboards, scratch-resistant surfaces and key tops that look newer for longer.
- Bundled software. HP includes valuable software with many of its PCs and notebooks. For example, HP DriveLock disk encryption and HP Credential Manager are bundled, viable alternatives to expensive third-party software. By single sourcing with HP, you don’t need to throw all this away and install a generic software image. In fact, HP Direct can help you build a disk image that incorporates the software you need.
- Consistency. All HP’s business class PCs share a single software image, which makes fleet management easier. The image is stable and consistent for the lifetime of the model configuration. Technicians only need one disk to rebuild a system or reinstall a missing driver. We can also work with you to develop a bespoke system image and factory install it on new machines before delivery. In addition, all our driver updates are available through Microsoft Windows Update. Similarly, we have a single print driver for nearly all our networked printers. HP has committed to longer product life cycles to reduce lifetime costs and simplify transition planning. Longer life cycles help reduce the cost of moving from one product range to another.
- Buy Direct. HP Direct addresses the needs of busy academic IT departments. HP can help you reduce the total cost of procurement and deployment by taking over routine (but time-consuming) activities. For example, we can install a standard software image on your new computers, and then deliver the PCs directly to end-user desktops, recycling old computers and removing packaging.
- Warranties and support. With a range of warranty options – HP eSupport and add-on Care Packs (extended warranties) – we have a comprehensive range of support options. Our standard warranty includes help that is normally only available at extra cost from other suppliers, such as rapid phone support or 90-day software support. For hard-pressed IT departments, this can help move the cost of providing frontline technical support to the faculty and staff.
